My name is Mackenzie Davies, and I am a motivated, resilient and compassionate learner with a strong interest in social issues, mental health, accessibility and supporting others. As a student in the Big Picture Program at Canberra College, I have developed an approach to learning that values independence, curiosity and meaningful engagement with topics that have real world relevance. 

My personal experiences have played an important role in shaping my interests and perspective. Growing up Deaf and navigating education, healthcare and everyday environments has given me first-hand insight into the barriers that can affect individuals with disabilities. These experiences have encouraged me to explore issues surrounding accessibility, discrimination, communication and inclusion, while also developing my interests in how professionals can better support individuals facing challenging circumstances. 

Throughout my Big Picture journey, I have undertaken subjects that reflect these interests. My work has included developing a resources kit designed to support social workers and other professionals working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, researching the effects of ongoing trauma in first responders, and exploring accessibility for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing of the Deaf community. These experiences have strengthened my ability to conduct research, communicate information effectively and approach complex social issues from multiple perspectives. 

I have also developed valuable skills through my employment in aged care and retail, as well as through competitive volleyball. These experiences have strengthened my communication, teamwork, organization and interpersonal skills. Working in aged care, in particular, has reinforced the importance of patience, empathy, and treating individuals with dignity and respect. 

I consider resilience, determination and willingness to learn to be some of my greatest strengths. I am not afraid to challenge myself, ask questions or explore unfamiliar ideas. My experiences have shaped me into a learner who is committed to personal growth and making a meaningful contribution to the communities around me. 

As I progress to university, I hope to build these experiences and continue developing the knowledge and skills needed to contribute positively to the lives of others.
